Several openings are available on Plymouth's Zoning Board of Adjustment

In order for a Town to implement and enforce a Zoning Ordinance, State law requires that the municipality make provisions to establish a Zoning Board of Adjustment. The Zoning Board makes decisions on a wide-variety of applications related to land-use and zoning, including variances, special exceptions, and appeals of administrative decisions.

Plymouth’s Zoning Board has seats for five members, as well as five alternates. There is one seat available for a full member, as well as multiple alternate seats. Members and alternates need to be residents of Plymouth, and are appointed by the Select Board for three-year terms.

A background in zoning or land-use is not required for membership. The Board’s decisions need to be made based on criteria established by State law and local ordinances, so all that is needed is an ability and willingness to dispassionately review the facts of a case, and make decisions objectively and impartially. New members will be provided with an array of training materials to help them prepare for their role.

The Zoning Board typically meets the first Tuesday of every month if an application has been received. Meetings of the Zoning Board are open to the public and broadcast on Pemi-Baker TV as well as online. If you would like to see the Board in action, feel free to attend a meeting, or watch an archived recording on YouTube! Being a member of the Zoning Board is an important civic duty – the decisions they make have a real, tangible impact on the lives of Plymouth’s residents.
